Our Approach
At Simcere, R&D is at the core of our commitment to developing first-to-market generic and innovative new pharmaceutical products, especially to treat diseases with a high incidence and/or mortality rate which demand more effective pharmacotherapy, such as cancer, cerebrovascular diseases, strokes, rheumatoid arthritis and infectious diseases.
Our approach is to balance our efforts between the development of first-to-market generic pharmaceuticals and innovative pharmaceuticals. Before beginning any R&D project, we perform a thorough market analysis to assess a potential drug's commercial viability and, in the case of generic pharmaceuticals, to determine its first-to-market status.
In addition to developing new pharmaceutical products, we continue to work hard to enhance our existing portfolio by making them safer with fewer side effects, be more convenient to administer and ultimately be more effective for our patients.
We currently have 150 research staff, 84 of which hold master's degrees and 28 hold Ph.D. degrees. Located primarily at our R&D facilities center in Nanjing, our R&D team has access to several technology platforms and is capable of conducting research on both chemical pharmaceuticals and biopharmaceuticals. |

Ensuring Leadership for Future Innovation
Simcere Postdoctoral Research Program
In 2003, with the goal of pursuing innovation and establishing ongoing leadership in China's pharmaceutical industry, Simcere established an innovative postdoctoral research program to offer post-doctoral researchers the opportunity to conduct innovative research and development projects through our facility in Nanjing under the guidance of our internal and external research scientists. We currently have 10 post-doctoral researchers participating in this program. Up to date, 10 post-doctoral researchers have participated in this program.
Collaboration in Research
Beyond our in-house research and development efforts, Simcere pursues active collaboration with leading universities and research institutions both within China and abroad.
In February 2006, we established a "Joint Laboratory for Drug Discovery" together with Tsinghua University for product research and development. Simcere is also cooperating on projects with China Pharmaceutical University and many other research institutes across China. In January 2007, Simcere signed an agreement with Advenchen to perform clinical research and development and commercialization of an anti-cancer medicine based on a compound owned by Advenchen.
We continue to increase our collaborations with international pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to develop and market new products in China, particularly in the anti-cancer or the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular field. Looking forward, we believe these international collaborations will help us gain valuable know-how and experience, further strengthen our research and development capabilities, and expand our product portfolio and pipeline. |
