Overview

Simcere Pharmaceutical Research Institute, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Simcere Pharmaceutical Group, was established in 2004 to research and develop new products to ensure the sustainable growth of the company.

Simcere R&D focuses on developing innovative drugs for indications with high mortality rates and is in clear demand by the market, and branded generic drugs with the potential to be widely accepted or will become the first-to-market in China. The core therapeutic areas in R&D are oncology, central nervous system, cardiovascular diseases, anti-infective diseases and orthopedics.

Simcere R&D is conducted in a couple of ways. Firstly, our in-house team identifies and develops potential candidates or may use research alliances with external research organizations for early stage development, such as our joint laboratory with Tsinghua University in Beijing. Alternatively, our team licenses-in the patented drug candidates which have already entered pre-clinical or clinical studies within China or aboard.

Up until January 2009, Simcere R&D had over 180 research scientist from all kinds of disciplines supporting a variety of chemical and biological research activities including: chemical synthesis, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmaceutical preparation, pharmacology, molecular cytobiology, laboratory animal center, Biopharmaceuticals, Medicinal Chemistry, natural medicine, computer aided drug design, as well as a clinical research team.

To date, Simcere has developed over 50 new drugs, of which ten are first-to-market in China. By July 2008, we had 83 pending invention patents (four PCT patents), two granted utility model patents, and fifteen granted invention patents (Including one US patent, one Australia patent). In December 2005, ZaiChang (Naftopidil), which was developed by our in-house research team, was awarded the Second Prize of State Scientific and Technological Progress. In 2008, Endu (Endostatin), a licensed-in product, was granted the 2008 Golden award of Chinese patents.
